MADRID, Sept 10 (Reuters) - At least four people were killed on Sunday when they were hit by a locomotive near Barcelona while trying to cross railway tracks, emergency services said. The accident happened at 8:22 p.m. in Montmelo near the Catalan capital when seven people crossed the tracks at a forbidden location, Renfe, the state rail operator, said. Three people were killed at the scene and a fourth person died in hospital after suffering a cardio-respiratory arrest, emergency services said on Sunday. The heaviest damage was in the provinces of Toledo and Madrid in the country's centre. Railway infrastructure manager Adif said high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia had resumed on Monday morning after overnight repairs to damage caused by the storm. The train connection between Madrid and Toledo, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south, remained closed.

Spanish region spent $276 million on trains before they realized they were too big to fit in the tunnels. The president of Cantabria, a region of northern Spain, called the error an "unspeakable botch." Two senior officials in the Spanish transport industry were fired earlier this week after local news outlet El Comercio reported last month that the government had spent €258 million (about $276 million) on unusable trains. Renfe — the country's national train operator — ordered the trains in 2020, granting the manufacturing contract to the transport manufacturing company CAF. This is not the first time there have been sizable train troubles in Europe: in 2014, a French rail company spent billions of euros on trains that were "too wide" for the tracks.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have hiked input costs and worsened supply-chain problems for train manufacturers, but a ramp-up in orders has nonetheless fuelled Alstom's sales growth. Revenue in the October-December period, Alstom's fiscal third quarter, amounted to 4.22 billion euros ($4.60 billion), compared with 3.92 billion in the same period a year earlier. Quarterly orders increased by 13% to 5.15 billion euros, with majority of them coming from Europe, the company said.
